ROUGH ST AAA CORUNDUM BLUE-ISH
Corundum is best known for its gem varieties, Ruby and Sapphire. Ruby and Sapphire are scientifically the same mineral, but just differ in color. Ruby is the red variety, and Sapphire is the variety that encompasses all other colors, although the most popular and valued color of Sapphire is blue. Sapphire is also only used to describe the gem variety; otherwise it is simply called Corundum.
Corundum is a very hard, tough, and stable mineral. For all practical purposes, it is the hardest mineral after Diamond, making it the second hardest mineral. It is also unaffected by acids and most environments. Translucent brown Corundum and Emery are the most common forms of Corundum. These are fairly common forms, and due to their great hardness and prevalence are the most favorable abrasives. The industrial term “emery” describing Corundum abrasives is derived from the variety Emery which is mined specifically for its use as an abrasive. Erosion may cause Emery to crumble and form sand, which are sometimes called “black sands.”
Chemical Formula Al2O3
Composition Aluminum oxide
Color Many colors, including blue, red, violet, pink, green, yellow, orange, gray, white, colorless, and black. Occasionally also multicolored or striped.

ROUGH ST AGATE BLUE
Agate is the banded form of the mineral Chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline variety of Quartz. Agate is the most varied and popular type of Chalcedony, having many varieties on its own. Although the pattern on every Agate is unique, the locality of an Agate will provide resemblances in banding style and color, thus lending many Agates with a geographic prefix.
Agate usually forms in rounded nodules or knobs which need to be sliced open to bring out the internal pattern hidden in the stone. Most Agate is ugly in its natural state; specimens must be polished to bring out their full beauty. Much of the Agate sold to collectors has been treated, in the form of tumbled stones or polished slabs. Popular collector forms of Agate include nodules or geodes sliced in the middle into two polished cross-sections, or thin slabs from nodule or geode cross-sections.
Agate is often dyed to enhance its colors. This is especially true of Agate from Brazil. Bright neon colors such as bright blue and red are rarely natural.
Agate is named after the Achates River (now known as the Dirillo River) on the island of Sicily, Italy, whose upper waters were an ancient source of this gemstone.
Chemical Formula SiO2
Composition Silicon dioxide
Color Multicolored in banded formation. Colors include white, blue, red, green, yellow, orange, brown, pink, purple, gray, and black. Some rarer forms of Agate are iridescent.

Hardness 7
Crystal System Hexagonal

ROUGH ST JASPER FISH SKIN
Jasper is an opaque form of Chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline variety of the mineral Quartz. It often contains an abundance of impurities, and therefore some regard it as a rock instead of a mineral. Jasper is usually associated with brown, yellow, or reddish colors, but may be used to describe other opaque colors of Chalcedony such as dark or mottled green and orange. Some forms of Jasper are banded, and these banded Jaspers may appear similar to Agate, but unlike Agate they are opaque. When Jasper is dull and lacking interesting colors or patterns, it is not Jasper but rather Chert.
Chemical Formula SiO2
Composition Silicon dioxide, usually with impurities of iron oxides or organic substances.
Color Brown, yellow, orange, red, green, or blue. May also refer to any form of opaque Chalcedony in all colors. Jasper is usually multicolored or banded.

ROUGH ST QUARTZ AMETHYST
Amethyst is a well known mineral and gemstone. It is the purple variety of the mineral Quartz, and its most valuable and prized variety. Its name derives from the Greek “amethystos”, which means “not drunken”, as Amethyst in antiquity was thought to ward off drunkenness. The color of some Amethyst specimens from certain localities slowly fade upon prolonged exposure to light. When used as a gemstone, Amethyst is often heat treated to deepen the color, or to transform it into Citrine.
Chemical Formula SiO2
Composition Silicon dioxide. Its purple coloring is usually caused by impurities of iron or manganese compounds.
Color Light to dark purple. Sometimes banded with purple and whitish lines. May also be mixed together with Citrine.

ROUGH ST XXX FLUORITE
Fluorite is a very popular mineral, and it naturally occurs in all colors of the spectrum. It is one of the most varied colored minerals in the mineral kingdom, and the colors may be very intense and almost electric. Pure Fluorite is colorless; the color variations are caused by various impurities. Some colors are deeply colored, and are especially pretty in large well-formed crystals, which Fluorite often forms. Sometimes coloring is caused by hydrocarbons, which can be removed from a specimen by heating. Some dealers may apply oil treatment upon amateur Fluorite specimens to enhance luster.
Fluorite is one of the more famous fluorescent minerals. Many specimens strongly fluoresce, in a great variation of color. In fact, the word “fluorescent” is derived from the mineral Fluorite. The name of the element fluorine is also derived from Fluorite, as Fluorite is by far the most common and well-known fluorine mineral.
Chemical Formula CaF2
Composition Calcium fluoride
Color Fluorite occurs in all colors, including colorless, white, purple, blue, red, pink, orange, yellow, brown, green, gray, and black. May also be multicolored and banded.

ROUGH ST XXX LABRADORITE
Labradorite is an unusual mineral. It can display a beautiful iridescent play of colors, caused by internal fractures in the mineral that reflect light back and forth, dispersing it into different colors. This effect, known as labradorescence, gives Labradorite its appeal and fame. Specimens sold to collectors are usually polished or sliced by dealers to fully bring out this effect. Sliced slabs are sometimes sold by dealers in water, which enhances the effect.
Labradorite belongs to the Plagioclase Feldspar group, an isomorphous solid solution series. Albite is one member, containing sodium and no calcium. The other end member, Anorthite, contains calcium and no sodium. Labradorite is an intermediary member of this series. Labradorite is considered by some authorities as a variety of Anorthite rather then a separate mineral.
Chemical Formula            (Ca,Na)Al1-2Si3-2O8
Color     White, gray, light blue, light green, pale orange-red, black, usually with a strong multicolored display of purple, blue, and green schillers.

ROUGH ST XXX OPAL GREEN
Opal, being amorphous, is not truly a mineral but a mineraloid. One of the scientifically accepted standards defining a mineral is that a mineral must have a crystal structure, which opal lacks. Despite this, virtually all scientific references, including the acclaimed Dana’s System of Mineralogy, categorize Opal together with the true minerals.
To protect Opals from crazing, they should not be washed with chemicals or detergents and should not be subject to sudden changes in temperature or lighting.
Chemical Formula SiO2 · nH2O
Composition Hydrous silicon dioxide. The water can range from 3% to 21% of the total weight, but is usually between 6% to 10%.
Color Colorless, white, yellow, orange, red, purple, blue, green, gray, brown, and black. These are some of the base colors of Opal.
Streak White
Hardness 4.5 – 6.5
Crystal System Amorphous

ROUGH ST XXX RUBELLITE
Rubellite Tourmaline is not a single mineral, but a group of several closely related minerals. The three most well-known members are Elbaite, Schorl, and Dravite. Other lesser known members include Uvite, Liddicoatite and Buergerite. There are yet more members of the Tourmaline group, but these are extremely rare and not discussed in this guide.
Tourmaline is both pyroelectric and piezoelectric. If a specimen is put under a pressure or temperature change, it will generate an electrical charge. When this happens, dust particles become attached to the crystal ends.
Chemical Formula – The formula for the Tourmaline group is very complex. See The chemical formula of Tourmaline for more details.
Composition See The chemical formula of Tourmaline.
Color Tourmaline is extremely varied in color. Colors include black, brown, green, red, pink, blue, and gray. White, colorless, yellow, orange, and purple colors are less common. Crystals are frequently multicolored, containing two or more distinct colors. Some specimens are pleochroic.
